Congratulations!

You’re expecting a baby! What an incredible journey you're about to begin! Whether it’s your first or your fifth, preparing for a new baby is a time filled with excitement, joy, (and yes, sometimes a little overwhelm). From doctor visits to diaper stockpiles, there’s so much to think about.

That’s why I created this easy-to-follow To-Do List for Expecting Moms in the Mainline Philadelphia to help you feel more organized and prepared and to make sure you don’t miss out on capturing one of the most fleeting, beautiful times: your newborn’s first days.

1. Schedule Your Prenatal Appointments

Stay on top of your baby’s development with regular check-ups. Whether you’ve chosen a doctor or midwife, your care provider will guide you through your pregnancy, help you stay healthy, and prepare you for labor and delivery.

💡 Pro Tip: Ask early about any paperwork or registration forms you’ll need to submit before labor.

2. Pack Your Hospital or Birthing Center Bag

Don’t wait until the last minute! Pack your bag around 35–36 weeks.

Essentials to include:

  • A cozy robe and non-slip socks
  • Toiletries and any medication
  • Going-home outfit for you and your baby
  • Baby blanket and hat (hospitals provide one, but many moms love bringing their own)
  • Phone charger and snacks!

3. Install a Car Seat

Most hospitals won’t discharge you without a proper car seat installed. Do your research; consider your lifestyle, space, and budget. Infant car seats, convertible models, or travel systems are all great options. Just make sure it's properly secured!

4. Prep for Baby Sleep

Newborns sleep a lot, though not always when you want them to! Make sure you’re ready with:

  • A firm crib or bassinet mattress
  • Waterproof mattress protectors (2)
  • Fitted crib/bassinet sheets (3–4)
  • Baby blankets and snooze hats
  • A safe sleeping setup (no pillows or stuffed animals)

5. Stock Up on Baby Basics

Start with:

  • 6–8 onesies or sleepers
  • Nightgowns (perfect for easy nighttime changes)
  • Socks, mittens, burp cloths, bibs
  • A few outfits for outings
  • Diapers and wipes (don’t overdo newborn size—they grow fast!)
  • Diaper cream and a diaper bag

6. Plan for Postpartum Nutrition

The fourth trimester is real and nourishing yourself is key to recovery.

✔️ Stock your pantry and freezer with:

  • Healthy snacks
  • Frozen fruits & veggies
  • Simple freezer meals

🎯 If you have a support system, ask friends or community members to bring meals. If not, double your recipes while cooking and freeze half.

(Stay tuned—I’ll be posting a list of my favorite postpartum freezer meals soon!)

Also, continue taking your prenatal vitamins after delivery, especially if you’re breastfeeding.

7. Create (or Finish) Your Baby Registry

A well-prepared baby registry helps others help you. It’s also great for your partner when those last-minute needs pop up, they’ll know exactly what to grab!
